Emotional Intelligence for Productivity and Relationships
By Nancy Schill

Many of the biggest challenges entrepreneurs face when growing a business have nothing to do with their passion. Thoughts about getting more money in the door and hiring the right staff can permeate your thoughts, and slow down productivity.

Business owners and managers alike can increase the odds of our success in these areas by paying attention to emotional intelligence.  That is, using our knowledge of how emotions affect people, to help us get the results we want.

More specifically, emotional intelligence involves how aware we are of our own emotions, how well we handle them, how in-tune we are with the people around us, and how well we manage relationships.

A friend was working with a team of contractors on a project where everyone’s emotions were being taxed because it was taking longer than anticipated. Communication between them started to break down, and after a second heated discussion with one of the contractors, she took some time to assess the situation and develop a new game plan that would create a win for everyone involved.

The next discussion she had with the contractor had a very different tone. She went into the discussion with an attitude of empathy!  She took the approach of understanding the position of the people she was working with and was successful in her goals.

By paying attention to how emotions have impact on the world around us, and by taking action toward better understanding other people, we can effectively generate more revenue for our business with higher sales and achievement of our goals and hire more successful employees, saving the business money and time.

Business Owner to dos:

Good leadership skills require right dose of emotional intelligence skills like empathy, self-confidence and optimism. To convey empathy, pay attention to nonverbal communication. To build confidence, commit to a project that is intimidating and work hard to accomplish it. Maintain optimism by reminding yourself of the satisfaction you feel after achieving your goal.

Next time you’re in a hiring position, pay attention to how well your candidate understands the perspectives of others and integrates that into their communication. Hiring people with empathy skills supports good relationships with customers and other employees, has a positive impact on the climate at work, and they tend to stay with the company longer.
